Mr. Snell World History The French Revolution Begins

Background Based on a French society of Inequality Population of 27 million divided into three estates. 1 st estate = Clergy,.5% population. 2 nd estate = Nobility, 1.5% population. 3 rd estate = Peasants, Bourgeoisie, Workers, 98% population.

Immediate Causes Near collapse of the government's finances. –Lavish spending under Louis XVI leading to bankruptcy. Food Shortages & Poor harvests –Hailstorm, then a drought, then a Frozen Winter in 1788 (So Nature). Price increases for food

Long-Term Causes Aristocrats & Bourgeoisie were drawn to the political ideas of the enlightenment. Bourgeoisie = middle class French Anti-Monarchial system view –No more system of privileges –Get rid of old social order

Estates-General Meeting Called by Louis XVI in need of new taxes. 1 st & 2 nd estates had 300 delegates each 3 rd estate had almost 600 total. System of voting was unfair, so the 3 rd estate wanted a constitutional monarchy, which the king refused, favoring current system.

The National Assembly June 17 th, 1789, the 3 rd estate calls themselves a National Assembly to draft a constitution. 3 days later they are locked out of the meeting location.

Tennis Court Oath The 3 rd estate’s move to a local tennis court where they swore to continue meet until a constitution was made! This infuriated the king, who wanted to use force against them. Commoners saved the 3 rd estate from letting this happen.

Storming the Bastille Citizens of Paris stormed this prison, also an armory, where they stole arms and destroyed it down to the bricks. This event sparked The Great Fear, which was a time of panic throughout France, which allowed the peasantry to take revenge vs. their masters, often violent.

New Freedom Adopted Declaration of the Rights of Man & The Citizen – Freedom and equal rights for all men, adopted by the National Assembly.

Meanwhile… Bread is brought back to Paris The King and royal family become prisoners to Paris. The National Assembly is selling church land for money, aka governmental control of the church. A new constitution means starts a limited monarchy, so the king is still around, but a new Legislative Assembly makes the laws. Catholic priests, nobility, the poor, and radicals wanted more drastic change.

Other Countries Fear Revolutions spreading cause a fear in Austria & Prussia, who threaten to restore Louis XVI to full power. France gets dominated in a war vs. Austria in The Radical Paris Comunne attacks the Legislative Assembly, suspending the monarchy and calling fourth a National Convention.

The National Convention Will choose France’s future government. Members of the attacking Paris Commune call themselves, “Sans- Culottes,” or ordinary patriots without fine clothes.
