What does Second Harvest do?

WHO IS SECOND HARVEST? Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin is a food bank and one of over 200 affiliates of Feeding America…the nation’s largest charitable hunger relief organization.

Food banks usually operate on the "warehouse" model. They act as food storage and distribution depots for smaller front line agencies. After the food is collected, sorted, safely stored and reviewed for quality, these food banks distribute it to non-profit community including food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and senior sites. Lines of differentiation are not as clear today. Food Banks vs Food Pantries – What are the key differences?

Our Mission: End hunger in southwestern Wisconsin through community partnerships.

13 million meals to our partner agencies Develop a multi-prong approach to increase participation in public and private food programs – more access to food Mobilize the public Strategic Plan – 3 legged stool

Enhanced tax donations available to organizations donating wholesome food to qualified 501c3s Donated food must be distributed only through 501c3s or religious entities Donated food is distributed with NO strings attached Donated food can not be sold Donated food can not be used for the purpose of fundraising as prizes What is IRS code 170 e(3)?

NO ! Under section IRS code 170 (e) 3 we are not allowed to sell donated food. What is SMF? Why are there no fees with TEFAP? Does Second Harvest SELL Food?

Food Industry Retail Grocery Chains Purchased Field-to-Foodbank Where does our food come from?

Our Mission: End hunger in southwestern Wisconsin through community partnerships.

New data says there is so much more to do – Missing Meal Gap Will the need remain high? Finding new sources of food… preferably donated Distribution – will you be able to take and distribute a lot more food? New, loyal financial donors to support the fight Need for more volunteer assistance Threats to gov’t assistance programs Challenges we face

Change from “business as usual” to “ending hunger” Coming Attractions

More distribution channels More sites Open more hours and more days of the week Allow more visits per month or change to “as-needed” Coming Attractions

Expansion of partners beyond the usual suspects Example: The partnership with the health care community, especially pediatricians, with the goal of improving health outcomes of our children by increasing access to healthy, nutritious food. Coming Attractions

Evaluating our role in: nutrition education the ability to make sure healthy-ER food is getting to people in need Coming Attractions

Creating hunger-free communities in which the community: Coming Attractions recognizes the need develops solutions that best fit their community have Second Harvest act as support

What do you think about plans for our future? What do YOU think is most important for us to focus on? AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION

Never doubt that we can end hunger – and in our lifetime – but we cannot do it without partnerships – without people like you. END HUNGER NOW!!
