New Options for Honors Diploma Stephanie Siddens Sr. Exec. Director Center for Curriculum and Assessment

Honors Diploma Law  Ohio law ( ) gives the State Board wide authority to set criteria  Minimum requirements: Students must meet the standard graduation requirements Students must also meet all but one of the extra criteria set by the State Board

Honors Diploma  Criteria are established in rule  There can be one or more honors diplomas

Honors Diploma Existing: Academic Honors International Baccalaureate Honors Diploma Career-Tech Honors Diploma Proposed New: STEM Honors Diploma Arts Honors Diploma Social Science and Civic Engagement

New Criteria Student Portfolio Field Experiences

Survey Administered Nov. 24-Dec. 8 1,045 respondents 2,954 comments Purpose to gather input on additional proposed diplomas and criteria to determine next steps

Results: New Honors Diplomas Respondents asked if new proposed honors diplomas: Matched what students excelling in those areas should achieve Would be a benefit to students Increased opportunities for students

New Honors Diplomas Matched Expectations? World languages should be included in all Honors Diplomas Concerns that districts may lack capacity to implement

New Honors Diplomas Benefit? Adding world languages requirements to all honors diplomas would make them more beneficial Little to no external benefit to students Students may be less well rounded by selecting particular honors diplomas early in high school

New Honors Diplomas Increased Opportunities? Adding world languages requirements to all would increase student opportunities Adding more honors diplomas will not necessarily increase opportunities for students

Results: New Criteria Extent field experience was beneficial and attainable Extent portfolio was beneficial and attainable

New Criteria Beneficial and Attainable? Concerns about how districts will implement Concerns with amount of opportunities students will have for field experience Students will not have enough time to complete field experience

Four Year Institutions Any student meeting GPA and ACT/SAT criteria would be admitted and considered for scholarship Added criteria would especially help students not meeting GPA and ACT/SAT criteria for admissions Consider changing to “all but two” criteria Honors diplomas way to motivate students to do more in high school

Next Steps World languages Draft rules Discuss further with committee Public comment
