Structure Fallopian tube: also known as the uterine tube, is a tube that leads eggs from the ovary to the uterus. Cervix: entrance to the uterus. Ovary: an organ that reproduces eggs. Uterus: in female mammals, the hollow muscular organ in which a fertilized egg is embedded and in which the embryo and fetus develop. Vagina: the canal in the female that extends from the vulva to the cervix and that receives the penis during sexual intercourse. Myometrium: muscular wall of the uterus. Endometrium: the mucous membrane lining the uterus. Fundus of uterus: the upper rounded extremity of the uterus above the openings of the fallopian tubes. .

External Structure Labia majora: The labia majora protect the other external reproductive organs. They are also known as "large lips," the labia majora are large and fleshy. The labia majora contain sweat and oil-secreting glands. After puberty, the labia majora are covered with hair. Labia minora: Also known as "small lips," they can be very small, up to 2 inches wide. They are inside the labia majora, and surround the openings to the vagina and urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body).

It secretes antibacterial substances as a defense against infection. Also closes and opens vaginal entrance. Urethra: pee comes out from the urethra. Functions of the female reproductive system : Internal Produces female egg cells necessary for reproduction called ova(ova is a gamete, which after fertilization, can develop into a new individual.) The system is designed to transport ova to site of fertilization. The fertilization of an egg by a sperm normally occurs in fallopian tubes. Female reproductive system produces female sex hormones that maintain in the reproductive cycle. During menopause the female reproductive system enables a woman to produce eggs.

Disease: Endometriosis What is It ?: During a woman’s menstrual cycle, cells from the womb are misplaced and grow outside the uterus. This is called endometriosis. These cells then grow. The growths are called endometrial tissue implants. The growths can swell and bleed. Symptoms: Endometriosis causes abdominal pain. Pain also may occur when a female is peeing or having sexual intercourse. Diarrhea, lower back pain, irregular menstrual bleeding, or blood in urine are also symptoms. Treatment: There is no cure for endometriosis. But This can be treated with pain medication and hormone treatment.

Disease #2: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease What is It?: An infection in the womb and fallopian tubes. This infection happens because bacteria from the vagina and cervix travel upwards into the uterus and fallopian tubes. This infection can occur as a result of STD’s such as gonorrhea and chlamydia. Some with PID may come infertile. Symptoms: Most common are fever, pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen, or lower back, and vaginal discharge with abnormal color, texture, or smell Treatment: This disease can be treated with antibiotics. If not treated, it can lead to something more serious such as chronic pelvic pain and will need surgery.

Ten Facts About Female Reproductive System 1. The largest cell in the female body is the egg. 2. Once it is released from the ovary, the egg can live from 12-24 hours. 3. The female is born with all the eggs she’ll ever have (2 million) but during her reproductive life, a woman will only ovulate 400 eggs. 4. The female reproductive system is located only in the pelvis. 5. Three purposes of the vagina: - It is where the penis is inserted during sexual intercourse. - it is the way the baby takes out of a woman’s body during childbirth (birth canal). - It allows the menstrual blood to leave body from uterus. (period) 6. The female reproductive system is hidden inside the body, unlike the male reproductive system. 7. The fallopian tubes are approximately 3 inches long. 8. In the womb, the baby’s body is covered in a thin layer of hair but as soon as it is born, it disappears. 9. The ovaries of a newborn girl contain about 600,000 immature eggs. 10. The female human body is capable of giving birth to 35 children in one lifetime.
