Repentance Lesson 31 Matthew 19:16-30

Theme Conversion comprises two elements: faith and repentance. Saving faith is a personal choice to trust Christ’s work on the cross. Repentance is a change of thinking, feeling, and act- ing with reference to sin.

I. Right Concept of Christ Matt. 19:16-17a A. Seeing Christ as merely a good man is not adequate for salvation. B. The man’s wrong concept of Christ led him to think he could perform some- thing to attain eternal life. C. God is good, look to Him.

II. Forsaking Specific Sin Matt. 19:17b-22 A. Misunderstanding God’s laws causes us to depend on ourselves. –1–1. Which command should I obey? Christ focused on the laws about our relationship with man (last 6), except one –2–2. What do I lack? need to do?

B. He had a specific sin –1–1. Covetousness –2–2. “Sell all” a. Jesus was not saying that we must be poor to follow him. b. The man needed to confront his sin, turn from it and turn to God.

III. God’s Working Matt. 19:23-26 A. Repentance is always difficult. B. Faith in God must accompany repentance. C. Man alone can do nothing to save himself, but with faith in God it is possible.

IV. Rewards Matt. 19:27-30 A. Material Reward –1–1. Great reward is promised to all who repent of their sins and follow Christ. –2–2. The believer’s reward is in both this life and the life to come.

B. Positional Reward –1–1. First shall be last and the last shall be first. –2–2. Christ’s standard of judg- ment is righteousness. –3–3. In the future, believers’ motives will be known, and those who are truly worthy will be honored.
