GERMANS INVADE RUSSIA/PEARL HARBOR

The German Invasion of the Soviet Union  Spring of 1941 Hitler turns his sights on USSR  Ultimate target for resettled Germans to live  Hitler believes USSR is close to bankrupt, and when attacked they will collapse.

Operation Barbarossa  June Germans invade USSR  Attacking with 3.6 million soldiers, largest attacking force in history.  3700 tanks and 2500 planes  Finland, Romania, and Hungary declare war on USSR to augment German attack.  Surprise attack a front of 1900 miles  Easily reach Moscow Gates  Germany seems to be on the way to victory

Operation Barbarossa  Blitzkriegs don’t work in Russia  Underestimated Soviet numbers  Industry relocates  Germans lose 800,000 soldiers  Arrival of winter (most severe in years)  No winter clothes or boots  frostbite  Over 2000 amputated  Russians prepared with help of Americans
