Basic information The Republic of Ireland is a state in the north-west of Europe which covers five-sixths of the island. The republic has got borders only with Northern Ireland - a part of UK. The name of the capital city is Dublin. Before 20 th century Ireland was a part of UK. After The War of Independence Ireland became a sovereign state. The population of Ireland is approximately 4.5 million. Official languages are Irish and English.
