About Me Born in Miami, Florida. B.A. in Minor studies for Nursing, Early Childhood Education, and Child and Family Development Master’s in Early Childhood Education- University of Georgia. Reading Endorsement—University of Georgia 1st year at F.AVE Enjoy reading world news, teaching, exercising, UGA football games, consignment shopping, and learning new things.

Why IB? The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non- profit educational foundation, motivated by its mission, focused on the student. The three programmes for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Founded in 1968, they currently work with 3,294 schools in 141 countries to develop and offer three challenging programmes to over 964,000 students aged 3 to 19 years. At F.AVE, we focus on the 11 Learner Profile Traits and the 6 Transdisciplinary Themes. (Units of Inquiry, Your child may refer to this as the UOI)

IBO Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. In our classroom, we encourage these practiced traits by recognizing others in the classroom that demonstrate these in our daily actions.

What is the PYP? / The IB Primary Years Programme, for students aged 3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. (We are PYP) See “Student Questions” on the I.B. Board Renfroe Middle and Decatur High have the MYP for 6 th -10 th graders. Decatur High offers a Diploma Programme, which offers your child to potentially complete an associates degree upon arrival to college.

Class Routines The Communication Folder is sent home on Monday or the first day of the week that students are at school. The Student Planner/Agenda should come home each day! Please ask to see it at home so they get used to this routine. A new reading contract will begin each term. I provide time, materials, books, and support for students to complete them. Reading for 30 minutes at home each day will be essential to helping them stay on track. Most work will be kept in a portfolio at school. If work is sent home for parents to look at, please return it to school. This portfolio is available for you to look at anytime. We will have shared learning, where parents will be invited to learning celebrations.

Our Curriculum To find out what we are learning each term, please go to the 4/5 website, click the tab “Curriculum and Instruction”  Standards based grading  4 th Grade GPS (Georgia Performance Standards) Georgiastandards.org Common Core Standards in Math and English Language Arts. 1, 2, 3, and 4 (see handout) Be mindful that if you’re child attended one of the CSD K-3 schools, the 1-4 scale is slightly different here at F.AVE. Report Cards (Every 6 weeks, N/A means that we did not assess it during that term)

Assessments MAP-Three times per year. Small group instruction is planned based on RIT bands CRCT-End of year End of Unit (Math, Science, Social Studies) Pre-Assessments Summative Assessment (Unit of Inquiry) 6x per year Guided Reading Assessments, Spelling Inventory Self Assessments & Conferencing

Homework Read for at least 30 minutes each day (They can log this in their weekly reading log). Stop them if it takes more than 45 minutes of steady work. We want to know if they are struggling! Some unfinished class work not completed during the day will be homework (the student will put a note in his or her planner).

Behavior Expectations As a class, we came up with “Classroom Agreements” Hopes and Dreams 4-step school-wide classroom management plan Stop and think behavior sheet- sent home to be signed. Mr. Rodney Thomas is our Dean of Students and Dr. Rebecca Root is our counselor.

FYI: I will start conducting student, teacher and parent conferences after fall break. Please me, Our classroom website can be accessed at
