and the Print Versus Digital Analysis

For this project, I will be comparing the print mode and the digital mode of the same text: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This includes an analysis of the Context Intended audience Linguistic Mode Visual Mode Spatial Mode And some Affordances and Constraints

Modes Book (print)E-book (digital) I will be observing the special cover art edition of the printed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone book. This is a new edition of the cover, with a modern appeal. I will be observing the original cover art of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone e- book, purchased on the pottermore website and displayed on my iPad mini.

CONTEXT Generally refers to where the text is located and how it is meant to be read BookE-book Where: The printed Harry Potter books are available for $10.99 in bookstores or as free loans in libraries. The paper edition can also be purchased online as well, however the sale does not become tangible for several days until the product is shipped to the consumer. I got my copy at a Barnes & Noble. How: Print books are meant to be read under adequate lighting, one page at a time, reading every single word of the text. Two pages are displayed at a time, the right side and the left side. Affordances: Reading a left page and then a right page is customary and therefore easy on the mind. Constraints: Turning the page takes some effort, and wind can interfere if outside. Also, inadequate lighting and be a set-back if reading at night. Also, once the book is irreparably damaged by water (for example) the value of the book instantly decreases. Where: The Harry Potter e-book is available for $8.99 on the Pottermore website exclusively. Once purchased, the text can be sent to a reading app of choice. I chose to download mine to a nook app on my iPad mini. How: e-books are read one page at a time, turning the page by either swiping or touching the screen with the right-hand thumb to flip forward, or the left- hand thumb to flip back. Affordances: Holding the device is easy while turning the pages. Pages turn quickly and effortlessly. Constraints: Training my mind to read a single page without another right beside it is somewhat strenuous. Also, acquiring the e-text was difficult for me as a first-time e-book user, as opposed to the customary purchase of a book online or instore.

INTENDED AUDIENCE The intended readership of the text BookE-book As a young adult novel, Harry Potter is targeted toward years olds, however popular culture has attracted other age groups to read it as well. Book sellers expect people that prefer print material over digital material to purchase and read the printed edition of Harry Potter. This includes the early-adapter readership of Harry Potter, because when Harry Potter first appeared, e-books were not yet popular in the young adult fiction market. Printed book devotees have a tendency to be pre-digital- age people, because they are most familiar with reading on print material. Booksellers might also expect their audience to be people who appreciate the tangible aspects of the printed edition, including the interactivity of writing in pages, the cover art, the page texture and the collectability of the physical item. As a young adult novel, Harry Potter is targeted toward years olds, however popular culture has attracted other age groups to read it as well. E-books are marketed to more technology-oriented people and people who do not have as much appreciation for books as tangible objects. They typically do not care for writing in the margins and appreciate having accessibility to multiple books on a single device. This crowd has a tendency to be younger, from the generation that has grown up with technology. Readers that own only the e-book version of the text primarily care for the content of the story and not the art or the collectability of the books as items.

LINGUISTIC MODE Word choice, delivery of text and the organization of writing BookE-book Word choice: As far as I can tell, the word choice of the actual story is the same in both the digital and print version Delivery: The text is delivered visually on a page made from paper Organization: The user can flip back and fourth through the pages to find a specific time in the storyline. Pages can be marked with book marks or page folds. Affordances: pages can be visually marked easily. Constraints: Flipping through pages to find specific scenes can be frustrating and time consuming. Also, the page does not provide any light, making nighttime reading difficult without lighting. Word choice: The e-book has one major difference in the opening pages; an acknowledgment that does not appear in the book. It reads “For Jessica, who loves stories, For Anne, who loved them too; And for Di, who heard this one first.” Delivery: The text is delivered visually on a screen. Organization: The user can use the navigation bar to quickly flip through chapters. A word search tool is also available to make searching for specific terms in the text easy. Pages can be marked by pressing the top right corner of the page until a nook symbol appears. Affordances: The word search tool is very effective in helping the reader navigate through the book. Constraints: The tools available are not intuitive, so new users may not know how to incorporate them into their reading.

VISUAL MODE Color, style and size BookE-book Color: The color of the cover is completely different, because I have the special print edition with the new art, which is mostly blue, so the cover is blue and the illustration is really pretty. The color of the pages are all the same, an off-white color Style: The chapter titles are always centered and the illustrations of each title are large enough to appreciate the details Size: The size of the book and its pages is always the same. Affordances: The illustrations of the chapter titles are larger and therefore easier to appreciate. Constraints: I cannot adjust the visual aspects of the font style and page color to my liking. Color: Same as with the print book Style: The chapter titles are in smaller font and appear on the left side of the page and the illustrations of each title appear smaller than in the print book. The font style is adjustable Size: The size of the reading device and its pages is always the same. Affordances: I can change the color of the pages and the style font to be easier on the eyes depending on the environment in which I am reading, for example, the black screen would be useful at nighttime. Constraints: The illustrations are not as large as in the print book, so the artistic components of the book cannot be fully appreciated.

SPATIAL MODE The physical arrangement and organization of the text (how the reader is guided) BookE-book Arrangement: Same as with the e-book. The chapters are in the same order, with chapter indentations. Organization: The font size and margin size are permanent traits of the book, so the same text will always appear on its respective page number. Affordances: I can rely on the text I want to find to always appear on the same page. Constraints: I cannot adjust the font size to my liking. Arrangement: Same as with the print book. Organization: I have the option to change the font size and the margin size, which changes the layout and number of pages significantly. Affordances: I can change the font size and margin size to my liking to make reading easier on the eyes. Constraints: Changing the font size and margin size too often can be a little disorienting.

Thank You for Watching “Whether you come back by page or by the screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.”
