Robert Watkins University of Texas, Austin Linda Tobash Institute of International Education GLOBAL CHANGE & CHALLENGES: IS THE UNITED STATES DOING ENOUGH? AACRAO 2013 ANNUAL CONFERENCE San Francisco, CA April 16, 2013

Engage in a spirited discussion as to whether the U.S. is doing enough or doing too much to addresses global changes and challenges. 2 PURPOSE

 U.S. higher education institutions policies and recognition practices pertaining to  academic credentials  length of study  assessment of quality of prior study and life experiences  recognition of non-traditional study and educational delivery mechanisms  Trends in U.S. higher education international enrollment management practices  recruitment and marketing  admission practices  differential international student pricing 3 TWO TOPICS

4 FORMAT Debate Lively Discussion

Are current U.S. higher education institutions’ policies and recognition practices pertaining to credentials, length of study, programs, assessment of quality of prior study and life experiences, and recognition of online offerings (e.g. MOOCS) evolving to meet the challenges posed by a global and technologically changing higher education landscape? Are U.S. institutions being flexible enough? Are they being too flexible? Is quality assurance and equity in admissions consideration at risk? 5 DEGREES, CREDENTIALS, PRIOR STUDY

Attracting international students is a very high priority for many U.S. institutions. However, it is currently a globally competitive environment for students and a fiscally volatile U.S. time. Are institutions engaging in questionable behaviors, particularly in the areas of international student marketing and recruiting, admission practices, and differential pricing? Is quality assurance and equity in admissions consideration cost of education at risk? 6 INTERNATIONAL ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT
