Merry Christmas

Christmas is a magical season, bringing together families and friends to share the traditions and customs that have been around for centuries. Most people are on holiday in these days and stay at home with their family. But… do you know what happened the first Christmas?

The First Christmas

Long ago in a land far away…

an angel told Mary she would have a baby.

Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem.

There was no room at the inn.

They had to stay in a stable.

Baby Jesus was born that night.

Angels told the shepherds the good news.

Three wise men followed a star.

They brought gifts for the baby Jesus.

This was the very first Christmas.

How is Christmas celebrated in Britain?

Christmas Eve marks the begininng of ‘Christmas-tide’ This is traditionally the day to decorate your house with :  A Christmas Tree  Tinsel MistletoeA Christmas Wreath

Perhaps the most exciting part of Christmas Eve happens when you are sleeping… When all the children are in bed, Father Christmas visits. They also leave Father Christmas a mince pie or two with a glass of Brandy, and a carrot for his reindeer. Before the children go to bed they leave out stockings at the end of their beds

To begin with, the children in the house normally wake up very early to open their presents in their stockings from Father Christmas The main day for Christmas celebrations is Christmas Day,, where the whole family will sit down to a Christmas dinner in the afternoon.

Christmas Dinner! A traditional Christmas dinner includes roast turkey, brussel sprouts, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, tiny sausages wrapped in bacon ( pigs in blankets), lots of vegetables and lots of gravy. For pudding (dessert), we eat a rich, fruity pudding which is covered in brandy and is then set on fire. This is to warn off evil spirits. It is called Christmas pudding.

Boxing Day is the day after Christmas Day (26th December) and is a public holiday in the UK and in some other Commonwealth countries It’s called ‘Boxing Day’ because people used to make up boxes of Christmas Presents and give them to the poor. Boxing Day is also associated with sports, a lot of big football and rugby matches are played and there is a big horse race It has also become the day when the January sales begin in the shops, so many families go shopping
