Science On a Sphere Workshop 2007 Reaction to NASA presentations Discussion of possible topics for new content Digital Earth conference & Other conferences Technical strand summary (John and Dave) Content strand summary (Carrie) Funding Opportunity Future meetings and maintaining this network Feedback survey Review of meeting objectives & goals –Status of deliverables Closing remarks (Carrie) Wrap Up Discussion

Possible themes & topics for new content Possible Themes IPY Corals Land use changes Living marine resources and their environments Climate change Possible topics Animal migrations and related environmental data Fish eye lens filming of underwater scenes Create auto-play style content?

Content Strand Summary Establish a method of providing iterative feedback to visualizers (NOAA and NASA and others) SOS is an ideal tool for displaying current, real and global science to the public Evaluations conducted so far are focused on assessing changes to the SOS exhibit that maximize the dwell time of the visitor We have to evaluate the content we create –Not only for dwell time of the visitor, but mostly for educational impact –How can we ensure we get this feedback from the users of the shared content? –Once we understand what works, generally, NOAA and NASA can adopt these methods and push content to institutions that is the most scientifically accurate and current –Intrigued by the programs that will evaluate impact of SOS in a formal ed program How complex should the concepts presented be? SOS institutions have a need for more than just the SOS content, they need additional information explaining the scientific phenomenon shown and (ideally) docent scripts Orienting the first time viewer Useful to provide to the content creators a summary of the misconceptions or lack of knowledge SOS viewers commonly have Annotating data sets Working with data layers User kiosks that control SOS & ones that complement SOS

Closing NOAA will have follow-up meetings with: –NASA to discuss content creation and virtual library possibilities –NSF program managers of ISE and REC to discuss potential collaboration. –Kate Haley-Goldman from ILI to discuss plans for program-level evaluation Which recommendations we take action on and how quickly will be determined by funding levels. Thank you all for coming Thanks to MSC, NASA, Jon and Joe, and Thanks to John!
