1 Digital library for Earth System Education Teaching Boxes
California Science Education Conference

2 Digital Library for Earth System Education
Supported by the National Science Foundation The geoscience member library of the National Science Digital Library DLESE is the Digital Library for Earth System Education ….you can find us on the web at We are fortunate to have the ongoing support of the National Science Foundation, since the inception of the project in 1999. We are the geoscience member library of NSDL, meaning that resources and collections found in DLESE are also accessible in that library as well, extending access to the resources to an even broader audience.

3 DLESE Goals Provide support and leadership in addressing the national reform agenda for science education, scientific literacy, and scientific discovery Support a broad audience of educators and learners: K-12, university, informal education, the public Improve the quality and efficiency of teaching and learning about the Earth system DLESE is both an organization and an entity. The organization is a collaborative effort of many individuals and institutions with the community of Earth science scientists, researchers, teachers, educational professionals, information technologists from around the country with a common purpose -nothing short of revolutionizing how earth SYSTEM science is taught in this country - The word SYSTEM might ring familiar to you - it has similar implications to the word INTERDISCIPLINARY -I'll get more into that in just a second. As an Entity, DLESE is... a Library. We realized early on that one of the components necessary to bring about this science education revolution was to bring the information to the people - gather the best educational resources for graduate school and professionals, undergraduates, high school, middle school, and elementary school into one place. with the unified goal of provide support and leadership in addressing the national reform agenda for science education, scientific literacy, and scientific discovery.

4 DLESE offers Earth science search engine for teachers
Free access to learning resources about the Earth System Lesson plans Activities Data Visualizations Instructor guides Virtual field trips… The library offers free access to learning resources about the Earth system …. These include a wide variety of things, from lesson plans, to computer activities, datasets and visualizations. In addition to a large community contributed collection There are themed collections (18) developed for a specific audience or topic. For example the Starting Point collections is designed to support teaching methods for entry level undergraduates in the geosciences, while DWEL that focuses on the science, economics and policy issues of water..for K-12 and informal settings. All resources have been selected and described by educators or scientists, and some have undergone additional scrutiny and are part of the DLESE Reviewed Collection.

5 Community connections Professional development
DLESE offers Community connections Professional development Opportunities to contribute reviews, provide feedback News and Opportunities 2003 Annual Meeting Digital libraries have the potential for providing much more than just resources to you In addition to educational resources, DLESE offers many opportunities for community networking and participation, though our Annual meeting, the Ambassadors program, and professional development workshops. There are mechanisms in place for users to review resources, share teaching tips and provide feedback on all aspects of library services. The News and Opportunities area provides listings of additional community-wide events, funding sources, and job opportunities. provide services and connections to other community members who may have similar challenges and solutions provide connections to broader community than you normally have access to k-12, informal community such as museums Teaching Box Workshop Series 2005

6 Opportunities to get involved
Suggest new resources for the library Submit teaching tips and reviews Tell others:

7 The Digital Library for Earth System Education NSDL’s Earth system and geoscience education node
DLESE provides Access to high-quality collections of educational resources Access to Earth data sets and imagery, including the tools and interfaces that enable their effective use in educational settings Support services to help educators and learners effectively create, use, and share educational resources Communication networks to facilitate interactions and collaborations across all dimensions of Earth system education

8 Collaborative Opportunities Abound!

9 Virtual Teaching Boxes: Resources for Teaching Earth Systems
Put in title and authors End with they are really cool…. Two phases and mention the third

10 What makes DLESE Teaching Boxes so cool?
How they are built… teachers working with scientists. Development uses a team approach, therefore the product is sound in both science content and pedagogy – a quality guarantee. Mention that this also means that the resources used are vetted!!!

11 Teamwork

12 What makes DLESE Teaching Boxes so cool?
1. How they are built… A conceptual framework… Each box is developed around a set of interconnected concepts that incorporates national and state science standards.

13 Framing the Concepts…

16 What makes DLESE Teaching Boxes so cool?
1. How they are built… 2. A conceptual framework… 3. A focus on inquiry… Each box engages students in the process of science – focusing on the gathering and analysis of evidence.

17 From continental drift … To plate tectonics …

19 What makes DLESE Teaching Boxes so cool?
1. How they are built… 2. A conceptual framework… 3. A focus on inquiry… 4. Earth system science …

20 What makes DLESE Teaching Boxes so cool?
A Professional Development Opportunity Teachers gain: increased understanding of science content experience with inquiry-based learning the opportunity to design, develop and share conceptual frameworks, lesson plans and other teaching resources university credit to satisfy NCLB requirements
