Knox Active Ageing Advisory Committee Ingredients for a functioning Advisory Committee… Teresa Donegan Coordinator Age Friendly Planning May 2015

Aim of Advisory Committee “The main purpose of the Knox Active Ageing Advisory Committee is to provide feedback and advice, obtained from engagement with older people and other key stakeholders, to support the decision making of Council and in turn the achievements under the Council Plan…”

The birth of the Advisory Committee… Development of The Knox Healthy Ageing Strategic Plan 2009 – 2013 Proposed Implementation Plan included the development of an Advisory Committee Identification of “…the need to broaden input from the community … to strengthen a Cross Council approach, to engage community representatives and to strengthen partnerships with external agencies…”

Who was involved in the development… Reference Group of Council including 2 Councillors and internal Council Officers Consultation within “older communities” and the broader aged care industry Recommendation to create an Advisory Committee involved a vision, endorsed by senior management, that the combination of a Plan and an Advisory Committee would enable Council to be clearly placed to plan a sustainable future in support for older residents.

3 key processes that make it work? 1. Mix of Community & Professional Representatives. 2. Active chairing and involvement of 2 Councillors. 3. Genuine consultation about Council Strategies/ emerging issues.

3 key outcomes from the Project… 1. Harnessing the voice of seniors in Knox. 2. Increased active participation by Seniors in Knox City Council’s consultations and developments. 3. Increased connections between Knox City Council/community groups/not for profit sector.

What we are doing to build on the success of the Advisory Committee… 1. Bi yearly review of the TOR for the Committee. 2. Yearly, half membership spill and active referral on after 2 consecutive terms. 3. Mechanisms to review engagement of members – where & how do committee members want to make a difference?
