Captioned Phones & more …Captioned Phones & more … For the deaf & hearing impairedFor the deaf & hearing impaired

What is it? Captioned Telephones are: Telephones with a small screen that captions your phone calls in almost real time. o There are different brands of this product: o CapTel o Caption Call o Clear Caption

Who can use it & why? Captioned Telephones are meant for those who are have hearing impairments. Captioned telephones make it easy for those with hearing impairments to have normal conversations over the telephone.

How does it work?

Cost CapTel phones may be provided for free depending on your disability and income, or at a discounted rate. Each State has its own different cost but prices range around $ Captioning service is provided for free by each state. But…You must have your own internet connection.

The Good & the Bad Advantages People who are hard of hearing can have phone calls. Easy to read display. Option of having captions on or off. Disadvantages You must have an internet connection If you also have a speech impairment it may be difficult to use. Conversations are relayed through a third person.

Accessibility in the CNMI CapTel is only available in the continental United States. We do not have this available here. BUT………

Online Video Sources can work well also… Such as Oovoo & Skype. Can be used to communicate via the internet. You can actually see the person, so those who can sign can communicate as well. Its FREE as long as you have a webcam, computer, & internet.
