Come and See! Learn with Me!

CGI = Cognitively Guided Instruction Cognitively Guided Instruction Integration of reading, math, and communication. Time to work independently, discuss in small groups, and share with large group. Students work from their level of understanding selecting strategies that work for them. Real-world applications.

Addition Algorithms and CGI Solve and be ready to share your thinking = CGI - Shirley had 48 marbles. Her friend Liz gave her 28 more marbles. How many does she have now?

Math Talks Question is presented and is read independently and then orally. Answer any clarifications. Allow independent think time. (May use manipulatives and self-selected strategies) Students peer share. Students share with whole class. (Not everybody shares.) Extension: Form algorithm to go with word problem.

Some students find it difficult to “explain” what they did to solve the problem. CGI stresses the ability to “understand” the numbers and the process they used to solve the problem.
