Read Chapter 8 Lesson 1 pg Define wave in your own words Describe the two types of waves. Give an example of each. Describe the three different types of wave motion. Give an example of each Define the four properties of waves in your own words.

Answers Define wave in your own words A transfer of energy through space or matter that does not displace (move) anything.

Answers Describe the two types of waves. Give an example of each. – Mechanical: Waves that move through matter. Ex: Instrument sound waves. – Electromagnetic: Waves that move through space and/or matter. Ex: The lights in the room.

Answers Describe three different types of wave motion – Transverse– perpendicular to the direction of the wave. Ex: Slinky going down stairs – Longitudinal– parallel to the direction of the wave. Ex: Snakes slithering across the sand – Combination– both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the wave. Ex: Ocean Waves

Answers Define the four parts of a wave – Wavelength: The distance of one trough to trough or peak to peak. – Frequency: The number of wavelength that pass a random position in space every second – Speed: How quickly a wave passes through a specific medium. – Amplitude: The “size” or “volume” of a wave
