Waves Wave Properties

Wave Definitions  Wave Rhythmic disturbance that transfers energy  Medium Material through which a disturbance travels  Mechanical Wave Wave that propagates through a medium

Example 1

Wave Properties  Crest – highest point above the equilibrium position  Trough – lowest point below the equilibrium position  Amplitude – displacement of medium (from equilibrium to crest or trough)  Wavelength (λ) Distance between two adjacent similar points of the wave (ie. crest to crest or trough to trough)

Waves are Periodic!  The frequency (ƒ) is the number of complete oscillations made in one second. Unit : Hz  The period (T) is the time taken for one complete oscillation. It is related to frequency by T = 1/ƒ Unit : s

Types of Waves  Transverse Displacement of the medium is perpendicular to motion of the wave EX: Electromagnetic Waves (EM) – light!  Longitudinal (Compressional) Displacement of the medium is parallel or anti-parallel to the motion of the wave EX: Sound sound simulation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPswnDcteS4
