Presentation transcript:

noun – a word that names a person, place, or thing

compound noun - a noun that is made up of more than one word grandmother grand piano

common noun - a noun that names any one of a group of persons, places, or things. It is not capitalized.

proper noun - a noun names a particular person, place, thing, or idea. It always begins with a capital letter

concrete noun - names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell)

abstract noun - names an idea, feeling, a quality, or a characteristic.

ferocity - n. fierceness; extreme intensity Ferocity is the state of being ferocious — wild, scary, and fierce. A five year-old girl pretending to be a lion will display her ferocity by roaring and baring her teeth.

quiver - v. to shake with a slight movement Scaredy cats around the globe know that quivering is a trembling, shaking motion. A cold gust of wind might make you quiver, as would an icy glare from the abominable snowman.

scowl - n.,v. v. frown with displeasure n. a facial expression of dislike or displeasure When you scowl you make an angry face. The angry face you make is also called a scowl. Lighten up.

linger - v. to continue to stay; delay leaving When someone lingers, he or she takes an unexpectedly long time to depart, as Romeo lingers when bidding Juliet farewell (or as annoying houseguests almost always tend to do).

conviction - n. an unshakable belief in something without need for proof or evidence A conviction is something certain: a judgment of guilty in court and a strong belief are both convictions.

sly - adj. marked by skill in deception (trickery) When you're sly, you're crafty, cunning, tricky, and wily. Being sly is being deceitful, though not in the worst way.

trudge – n.,v. walk heavily and firmly, as when weary, or through mud The noun trudge describes a long, difficult walk. You know those stories your grandparents tell about how they used to walk six miles uphill in the brutal cold every morning just to get to school? They're describing a trudge. Trudge is also a verb that means to walk slowly or firmly, like when you're tired.

unison - n. harmony or agreement; as with one voice The noun unison describes something that is synchronized or simultaneous, like when someone asks a question and you and your friend respond with the exact same answer at the same moment. When something is said in unison, two or more voices sound like one.

bouquet - n. an arrangement of flowers usually given as a present A bouquet is an arrangement of flowers. A simple bouquet of flowers from your garden makes a lovely centerpiece for your table or a nice hostess gift when you are a guest.

sheepish - adj. embarrassed; showing a sense of shame Sheep aren't the smartest most confident creatures. They're always clustering together as if they're ashamed to be alone. When you're sheepish, you're like a sheep — embarrassed and not confident.
