VITAMINS  Essential for providing good health. Nutrients our body don’t produce on its on and we have to replace by foods we eat or vitamins

Supplements  Synthetic or natural substances which can be purchased as pills, tablets, capsules, powders, or liquids.

Multivitamins contains  A multivitamin should contain fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E; water-soluble vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid, and Vitamin C, Iron, minerals such as zinc, magnesium, copper, and calcium in them

What are fat-soluble and water-soluble  Fat-soluble are stored in the liver and fatty tissues. These are not readily excreted from the body.  Water-soluble vitamins travel in the blood and are stored in limited amounts. These are readily excreted from the body through urine.

Who need multivitamins  People over 60 because they don’t get the nutrients they need for various reasons  Woman of childbearing age because they need at least 400 micrograms daily of folate.  A strict vegetarian may not get enough vitamins

Dietary Supplements Products intended to supplement the diet that contain at least one dietary ingredient to include:  Vitamins  Minerals  Herbs or other botanicals  Amino acids and substances such as enzymes, organ tissues, glandulars, and metabolites

Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act 1994 As a result of this act, dietary supplements are no longer regulated as foods and are not subject to pre-market safety evaluations. The product must be labeled as a dietary supplement. Information on the product label must not represent the product as a conventional food or a sole item of a meal or diet. Allows for product labeling claims as long as it does not diagnose, prevent, treat or cure a specific disease.

Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act 1994 While the statements must be truthful and not misleading, there is not a review/approval process by the FDA. The manufacturer is responsible to ensure the product is safe. Manufacturers/distributors are not required to record, investigate or forward to the FDA any reports of injuries or illnesses that may be related to use of their product.
