2 Supplements and Health What is a dietary supplement? A food product added to the total diet that contains at least one of the following ingredients: vitamin, mineral, herb, botanical, amino acid, metabolite, constituent, extract, combination of these ingredients.

3 Supplements A supplement is something added, particularly to correct a deficiency such as Vitamin C. Many dietary supplements contain substances other than essential nutrients. They are marketed to increase the total dietary intake of some food or plant substance.

14 Supplements Things to know about supplements. -they can be marketed without testing -they can make any claim but that they will prevent, treat or cure a specific disease. -they often misrepresent research -the government must prove that the claims they make are false

15 Supplements Advice -Buy standardized products manufactured in the US with a Nutrition Facts Panel -Use only single ingredient supplements. -Keep a record of the effects -Stop taking them if you experience any problems.

16 Supplements Can supplements harm my health? -nutrition is only one factor that influences health. If people rely on a supplement they may neglect lifestyle behaviors such as exercise.

17 Supplements -The may provide a false sense of security to people who use them as substitutes for a healthful diet. -Large doses of a single nutrient can have a harmful effect. While they may prevent some things they will cause other problems.

18 Supplements -People may rely on supplements rather than quality medical advice. -Supplements vary widely in quality. Studies have shown that they may or may not contain the main ingredient and often contain things not listed on the label. This can pose a health risk.
