TYPES OF MOVEMENT

3 Types of movement: 1. Locomotor – movement of the body from place to place (gross motor) 2. Nonlocomotor – movement of the body while staying in one place (helps develop balance and coordination) 3. Manipulative – movement that involves controlled use of the hands and feet (fine motor)

Purposeful Movement? There are four purposes of movement: 1. Contributes to intellectual development 2. Contributes to physical growth and development 3. Contributes to emotional development 4. Contributes to social development ASK

Purposeful movement requires practice. What is the issue with the idea of the children, “running off energy”? Click Here to ReturnASK

4 Concepts of Movement 1. Body – what is the body doing (walk, hop, run, etc.) 2. Effort – describes how the movement is done (slowly, quickly, etc.) 3. Space - describes direction the movement takes place (forward, sideways, under, etc.) 4. Relationship – describes the interaction between the person and objects in environment ( around chair, to the door, etc.)
