Hi! Are you ready to explore some locomotor skills?

Table of Contents 1.Definition of Locomotor Skills 2.8 Components to Locomotor Skills 3.Why is this important to know? First we should understand the basics!

What are Locomotor skills? Skills used to move the body from one place to another or to project the body upward. Basic locomotor steps are the walk, run, hop, jump, skip, slide, & gallop. They form the foundation of gross motor coordination an involve large muscle movement.

What are the 8 components to locomotor skills? 1.Walking: toes pointed straight ahead; weight transfer from heels to balls of feet and then to toes for push-off. One foot is always in contact with the ground. 2.Running: Both feet are off of the ground for a brief moment. Slight body lean forward. Weight is on the balls of the feel and arms swing back and forth from the shoulders with a bend at elbows. 3.Jumping: Taking off with both feet and landing on both feet. Land lightly on balls of feet with kneed bent. 4.Hopping: Propelling the body up and down on same foot.

Locomotor components continued: 5. Sliding: Lead foot steps to the side and other foot follows quickly. 6. Galloping: Similar to sliding, but movement is in a forward direction. 7. Leaping: An elongated step designed to cover distance or to move over an obstacle. 8. Skipping: A series of step-hops done with alternate feet. Now we know the components, lets learn why!

Why is this important to know? As children gain increasing competency with skills, the skills are applied in games, dance, and gymnastics environment. Children need multiple and recurring experiences with each skill to become competent movers. The skills will help you move from a variety of simple to complex movement patterns. Locomotor skills include traveling, chasing, fleeing, and dodging. Alright, Let’s Begin!
