C THE HAPPY BASIN SUSTAINABLE, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, AND A NEW DOOR TO THE FUTURE By: Sithara and Vithusha

THE PROBLEM  Around the world, over 780 million people do not have access to safe and clean drinking water, and because of this, every year 840,000 people die due to water related issues.  Water that is used as a dumping ground for animal and human waste is the same water source that people in developing nations consume. This results in various illnesses caused by bacteria

THE SOLUTION: Happy Basin  The Happy Basin is a form of appropriate technology that is suited for all developing nations because of its easy accessibility and usage.  It is an instant water purifier and is the key to easily accessing safe and clean drinking water.  It also doubles as a sun hat.  This innovation was designed for people who lack unsafe, clean water.

Water intake holes are shaped like a world map

Creation of the Happy Basin  The Happy Basin was created by two Korean designers, Woo-Sik Kim and Duck Soo Choi, for the children in Africa who drink unclean water.  This form of appropriate technology has won the ‘Seoul Design Olympiad’ in  It has been proven effective in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea- Bissau.

How does it work?

 You simply need to push the basin into the water body and let the surface tension do its work  It is a bowl that floats on the top of water  It has nano-ceramic filters at the bottom  It has water intake holes, which looks like the world map

Sustainability  The Happy Basin is sustainable since it requires very few natural resources and produces no pollution for the environment.  This appropriate technology is in fact appropriate in many communities within Africa, since they all lack clean and safe drinking water.  This is a great solution to a growing problem, and also promotes self- sufficiency.  It is very beneficial to have simple solutions like the Happy Basin rather than relying on complex, high-tech projects.  It is very simple, and instant water filtering.
