1 GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT: WATER!
Have you ever gotten sick from drinking unsanitary water? Do you know someone who has?

2 WATER Introduction goo.gl/2rdMCm
1. What is Lug-A-Jug? Describe the course. 2. What is it attempting to help? 3. Why did they choose 6K? 4. What can be taken from this event?

3 Clean water is necessary for life
So then why does 20% of the Earth's population lack access to clean, safe drinking water? Drinking Bathing Agriculture Sanitation

4 How is the world’s water distributed?
How much of the Earth's water is fresh water? Where can the fresh water be found? Less than 1% is in the more easily accessible surface water (lakes, swamps, rivers, etc.)

5 How is the world’s water distributed?
How much of the Earth's water is fresh water? Where can the fresh water be found? Less than 1% is in the more easily accessible surface water (lakes, swamps, rivers, etc.)

6 Water is scarce in some regions
2.4 billion people live in high water stressed regions.

7 Causes for the water crisis:
Many factors contribute to our current situation: Climate and geography Lack of water systems and infrastructure Inadequate sanitation 2.6 billion people lack access to sanitation systems that separate sewage from drinking water. Inadequate sanitation and no access to clean water have been highly correlated with disease

8 What types of pollutants are found on contaminated water?
#4 Pollution! What types of pollutants are found on contaminated water? sewage pesticides and fertilizers industrial water dumping high levels of arsenic and fluoride

9 Water scarcity is projected to worsen. Why?

10 Where are we using most of our clean water?

11 Is there a relationship between poverty and lack of access to clean water?

12 Countries vary in wealth!

13 Lack clean water: Lack sanitation:
Almost 2 in 3 people survive on less than $2/day, with one in three living on less than $1/day. Of the 2.6 billion who do not have adequate sanitation, a little more than half live on less than $2/day.

14 water scarcity impacts:
Health, education, and economic growth. The World Water Forum estimates: 7 million people die yearly from diseases linked to water. Half of the world's rivers and lakes are polluted. Shortages could create millions of refugees seeking homes in a location accessible to water.

15 Impact of water scarcity
The World Health Organization estimates: The leading cause of death in children under 5 are related to unclean water; there are about 5,000 child deaths every day. Without action, as many as 135 million people could die from water-related diseases by 2020.

16 Impact of water scarcity
Carrying water takes time!

17 How do our societies value water?
What do you do to conserve water?

18 What can we do to address this issue?
We can use less! Look for new sources of clean water? Treat the undrinkable water we have!

19 SHOW MS. PIERROT YOUR NOTES FOR POINTS!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Water Spanish-, Chinese-, and Arabic- speaking countries

21 Give me the gist! Each group will have a specific region (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic), and will research water issues in that region. Give the gist of that region by completing the sheet given to you!

22 Current event by: Olivia 
goo.gl/utaKUf BEFORE- 1. What comes to mind when you hear the word “toxic”? AFTER- 2. Algae blooms affected other iconic freshwater bodies around the world. Please list one and tell why Lake Bakail is extra special. 3. The article points out that environmental harm is being done due to the toxic algae, but what/who else is affected and how is it affected Russia? 4. Do you feel it would be beneficial for Russia to fund a researching campaign to help figure out and manage the issue of Spirogyra?

23 “Issue Tree”: WATER Description: Issue trees are powerful tools that allow you explore the causes, effects, and solutions of a given issue. Task: Using the sheet from the other day, create an Issue tree highlighting the water issues in your region.

24 “Issue Tree”: How to Design
Effects (the branches) Causes (The roots) Problem (The trunk) Solution (whatever hangs from the tree!)

25 Let’s do one together first! What issue should we focus on?
