Session 4: Ensuring Safe Hospitals: Role of Stakeholders

Objectives Session Objectives: At the end of this session the participants will be able to: –Identify stakeholders in ensuring hospitals are safe from disasters. –Clarify roles of specific stakeholders in. –Identify strategies to maximize roles of stakeholders.

Exercise 5: Stakeholders and their Roles Instructions –Divide into hospital teams. –Do the following tasks: Identify stakeholders List roles that these stakeholders play in the context of safe hospital campaigns. –Write your output on a flipchart for short sharing.

Examples of stakeholders Governments UN, international and regional agencies and NGOs Health institutions and the health workforce The donor community Financial institution Universities, schools and professional associations

Examples of stakeholders Governments –Take a leadership position — make this a national priority –Create a framework in which all sectors and government levels can help make hospitals and health facilities resistant to natural hazards –Draft, pass and enforce legislation in particular building codes that protect hospitals

Examples of stakeholders UN, international and regional agencies and NGOs –Build on existing inter-agency mechanisms and strategic partnerships –Highlight this cross-cutting issue on the agenda of agency or regional meetings –Collect, share and disseminate good practices

Examples of stakeholders Health institutions and the health workforce –Participate in National Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction –Become agents of disaster risk reduction –Seek opportunities to update skills and knowledge –Conduct media events in and outside of hospitals and health facilities

Examples of stakeholders The donor community –Consider how donor-funded development projects can contribute to achieving the goal of hospitals safe from disasters –Look for ways to mainstream health sector risk reduction into project design –Make “hospitals safe from disasters” a component of the larger disaster and development portfolio

Examples of stakeholders Financial institution –Propose that all health construction projects have incorporated risk reduction measures –Promote research and studies from an economic point of view –Solicit government enforcement of existing legislation on building codes
