Presentation transcript:

 TEACH USING THE INQUIRY APPROACH  Common Core Math Practices  Next Generation Science  Hands-On, Minds-On, Real World!

 The National Science Education Standards define inquiry as…  “the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence” (NRC 1996, p. 23)

 Think of inquiry as “the ways scientists think about and try to solve problems using logic.”  Logic  Reasoning from data  Apply scientific skills  Real world problems

 Observe  Infer  Measure  Predict / Hypothesize  Variables  Experiment

 The National Research Council (2000) identified several “essential features” that describe what a learner does in inquiry:  Engages with a scientific question  Participates in design of procedures  Gives priority to evidence  Formulates explanations  Connects explanations to scientific knowledge  Communicates and justifies explanations

 Asking the questions  Designing the procedures  Deciding what data to collect  Formulating explanations based on the data  Communicating and justifying the results

 Posing questions  Stimulating discussions  Involving students with science problems  Initiating and extending student thinking  Engaging student curiosity and wonder  Inspiring students to observe and reason  Sharpening student’s critical thinking and communication abilities

 Time to see this in action…

 YES! You should be using the inquiry approach in Math Class too!  WHY? st Century Learning requires performance based real world application  Let’s look at some samples of what is expected of our kids!
