Environment/Landscape The Tlingit tribe lived on the narrow mainland coast, islands, bays, and fjords of southeast Alaska to Washington State. The heavy rain creates a luxurious rainforest environment and a temperate climate. Where they live provides one of the richest maritime environments in the world. Dense evergreen forests are immediately behind the narrow beach in southwest Alaska. Snow-capped mountains, blue oceans, rushing rivers, and green forests.

Clothing-What kinds of materials did this tribe use for clothing? The Tlingit tribe wore carved marks, weapons and “ Chilikat ” robes. Some of the robes are fringed, fur-trimmed, and multicolored. The designs on clothing depict animals significant to the family and town. The Tinglit tribe use to wear hats made of roots. Men and women wore ear and nose rings. Housing The Tlingit tribe lived in simple, large rectangular structures. The floor of the house was dug down so they had two separate levels. The ledge was used for sleeping and was divided by wooden panels for some privacy. On the outside of some of the houses there was tribal art that decorated the front. On other houses they left the outside blank, and decorated the inside with blankets and tribal art. The Tlingit tribe lived in simple, large rectangular structures. Transportation One way that they got around was in the dugout canoes they they used to help them fish and move along the coast. The way that most of them moved across the land on foot. They moved a lot so they needed a good way to get up and down the coast so there would be big groups at a time of them going up and down river.

Political/Social Organization Social status amongst the villagers was labeled by totem poles outside their dwellings, along with material possessions such as baskets, cloaks, ornaments and food.
