Fugitive Slave Act

Part of the Compromise of 1850 Allowed slave owners to go up North to get their slaves back. Police had to arrest runaway slaves by law. –Given bonuses for catching runaway slaves. Slave owners only had to swear in court that the slave was their property. Slaves couldn’t fight it in court.

Many free Blacks were arrested and sent into slavery. Those who helped runaway slaves could go to jail and/or pay a fine. Increased the number of abolitionists Caused the Underground Railroad to go all the way to Canada.
