CJ 213 Unit 3 Information Technology

Crime Analysis Collection and analysis of data pertaining to a criminal incident, offender and target. Crime Analysis will only be as good as the data collected in the process. In order to understand the data collected, we have to understand the causes of it. Sort of a street-level criminology if you will.

Three essential citeria for crime analysis 1) Timeliness – does the data show that there is currently a problem or is it a problem of the past. 2) Relevancy – do the measures used to collect the data reflect what is intended. 3) Reliability – would the same data interpreted by different people at different times lead to the same conclusion.

Technologies Used to track data CAD – Computer aided dispatching. Used to dispatch calls for police service. This is usually the first point of data entry. Mobile Computing – allows the officer to do things in the field such as license checks, tag checks and persons checks. Records Management System – an RMS captures, maintains and analyzes all police agency and incident related information for later use.

GIS Geographic Information System It is used to capture, store, retrieve and analysis spatial data. Geomapping – is the use of maps and the GIS to show on a map where crime/s are being committed. Geomapping can greatly increase the accountability of a police agency.

CompStat Computer driven crime statistics Key Elements –1) Specific Objectives –2) Accurate and timely intelligence –3) Effective tactics –4) Rapid deployment of personnel and resources –5) Relentless follow-up and assessment.

Geographic Profiling Uses geology, psychology and mathematics to identify the location of an offender, is most commonly associated with tracking down rapists, serial killers and arsonists.

GPS Global Positioning System Can be used to track officers Can be used to track stolen vehicles or equipment. Can be used to track offenders Used to help guide officers to specific locations.

Internet Agencies are using the internet to reach out to citizens with news about the department or specific crimes. Citizens can file complaints on line. Apply for jobs Used for employees to receive information about work related issues or crime information.
