MY WAY ON HOW TO LEAD Whitney Garrett

Being a leader isn’t about bossing or being above everyone. It takes an unconventional individual to lead a group.

One must keep their composure. I, as a leader, have a tough time remaining composed. My temper is about needle thick but there aren’t any perfect leaders. Composure

Character is defined, in my personal perspective, as having integrity an doing the right thing at all times. It doesn’t matter who's looking or not, a leader is trying to make correct decisions. Character

As a captain on the varsity volleyball team, it was tough dealing with attitudes and defiant ways. My teammates made it easy for anyone to talk trash about them, because of their behavior. It would take a lot in me not to go off and trash their entire reputation. I wasn’t going to talk about how they’re ruining our team without them present. Character

There is nothing wrong with a leader being on the “sweet” side but he most have backbone also. If a leader is soft, its easier for them to be taken advantage of. A leader must be able to ENFORCE! Enforcer

I tried the whole “be nice to the people no matter what” attitude, but in the end, I got bit in the butt. If you’re going to lead, I’d say don’t beat around the bush. Lay down the law and handle the task at hand. Enforcer

Sometimes, while leading, the followers lose focus and get off track. Remind them of the bigger picture. Refocuser

When I scored 5 goals against Loris in a soccer game, everyone hyped up the amount of goals scored by me. I told my team that it isn’t about one person scoring goals, it’s about us ALL winning as a team. With one statement, I refocused them to the larger accomplishment. Refocuser

A leader cant lead without having high self-esteem. He must be confident within them selves. Confidence

BUILDING CONFIDENCE Once a person gains confidence within themselves, then they can build confidence in others.

A broken tool cant fix a broken lawnmower. -Whitney Garrett

On the soccer team, I didn't wear a captain band, but I took up my share as a team leader. I assisted with building confidence. At times when the players would lose faith or we’d start off playing rough, I would encourage my team mates.

Once you tie all of these into yourself, you can lead by example. Why? Because you’ve mastered the elements to being a leader. Now you can strut and handle business, that even someone else would become inspired and want t uptake their own leadership position. Lead by Example
