water is made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded with one oxygen atom What is Water?? water is made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded with one oxygen atom

Polarity makes water molecules special What is Water?? Polarity makes water molecules special

What is Water?? Polarity’s Effects causes water’s solid form, ice, to float atop its liquid form, water and unusual chemical property

What is Water?? the molecule has a slight negative charge on its oxygen end and a slight positive on its hydrogen end. Because of this, water molecules are polar

What is Water?? Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid, and has therefore been nicknamed “the universal solvent.”

What is Water?? Water is the only chemical compound on Earth’s surface that is naturally present as liquid, gas and solid.

Importance of Water

Importance of Water -the human body consisting of 75 percent of it -Water makes up 50 to 90 percent of the weight of living things -water contains no calories and can serve as an appetite suppressant and helps the body metabolize stored fat

Importance of Water -water for drinking, cooking, cultivating, washing, cleaning, bathing, transporting, farming, living and electricity -water avoid dehydration -Important organs like the kidneys, brain, and heart cannot function properly without water

Sources of Water in Semarang

Sources of Water in Semarang -From the river -From the Deep Well -From Spring Water

Sources of Water in Semarang Among the resources of Water, none is safe from drinking water from these sources need to be treated before they can be considered safe for drinking.

Among the reasons why water is not safe for drinking are pollution from chemical factories, from the rubbish, excessive mineral deposits and old leaking pipes.

Water is needed to be purified before it can be used for drinking

Water purification generally means freeing water from any kind of impurity it contains, such as contaminants or micro organisms

Stages in Water Purification

Stages in Water Purification Aeration In some water treatment plants, the first step is aeration. The raw water first goes to aeration tanks where large quantities of air are injected into and bubble through the raw water. Aeration can reduce tastes and odors and can oxidize soluble iron.

Stages in Water Purification Flash Mixing The next step after aeration is flash mixing One or more chemicals are mixed into the raw water to neutralize or remove specific impurities found in the raw water

Stages in Water Purification Flocculation After flash mixing, the mixing of the chemicals and the raw water continues but at a slower pace. The added chemicals react with the impurities in the raw water and remove the dissolved impurities by reacting with the impurities and forming small particles of solid matter suspended in the water

Stages in Water Purification Settling Gravity and time are all that is needed to remove the floc from the water. The water is sent to a clarifier (settling basin) where the floc is allowed to settle out of the water

Stages in Water Purification Filtration Allowing the partially treated water to settle may remove some, but not all, of the floc. The water usually is then filtered through sand to remove remaining solids

Stages in Water Purification Additives Additional chemicals may be mixed in the water before it leaves the water treatment plant. Chlorine is usually added at this time, not only to disinfect the water but to provide a level of chlorine sufficient to help prevent future growth of pathogens

Poor people cannot afford to buy purified water so they boil water before drinking, others just drink the water as it is

Because of these reasons, our team is planning to devise a cheap and easy to use portable water purifier
