Instructor: Jered Faires Week 1, Spring Semester 2015 Oral English

Instructor: William Jered Faires You may call me: Mr. Faires Teacher You may Not call me: Mr. Jered or Mr. William

Activity: All About Me (Part 4) Exchange your worksheet with a partner. Introduce yourselves to each other. Your partner will interview you and fill in Part 4 of your worksheet. Use complete sentences to answer. You have10 minutes!

Partner Introductions Each pair has 1 minute to introduce each other using the “All About Me” forms: Your partner’s English name Where your partner is from One interesting fact about them (Part 4)

Course Syllabus: Objectives 1. To improve students’ listening and speaking skills 2. To strengthen students’ learning ability (predicting, taking notes, making inference, cooperating with others, etc.) 3. To enhance students’ cultural literacy and intercultural awareness 4. To improve students’ independent and creative thinking abilities

Elements of Your Grade RUC requires an even distribution of high, middle and low grades. Only 20% of the class can receive 90% or higher. This is a school policy and I can not change it. Participation / Attendance / Homework : 20% Midterm exam: 20% Final exam:60%

Class Requirements Use only English in all class activities Hand in homework on the date it is due 1.Bring notebook (with pen/pencil) to class 2.Bring “Passages 5” textbook each week 3.Bring Oral Log to Class (B5 notebook)

Attendance, Participation, & Exams 1. Attendance for this class is mandatory and will constitute part of students’ grade. Students are required to come to every class ready to actively participate. For each unexcused class a student misses, he or she will lose 3%. More than three total absences will result in an absolute failure of this course.

Attendance, Participation, & Exams The best way to earn participation points is to ask questions, give comments and actively participate in the discussion and debate. In their mid-term and final exams students will be evaluated based on their diction, tone, content, delivery, fluency, and use of speaking techniques.

Buy Your Textbook You should be able to buy your Passages 5 textbook one of two places. 1. Buy it in the Mingde Basement 2. Buy it at the bookstore below the Gym. Last year the owner said that he would give a discount if the whole class bought the book there together.

Rules and Expectations Follow Directions Attend Class: Minus 1-3% for absences Turn off your phone – or I take it English Only

Rules and Expectations – more details Tardiness…be ready to begin at the bell (3 times late = 1 time absent) Cheating…copying will not be tolerated Materials…must be brought each week Homework…credit only if turned in on time! Cell Phones…are not permitted in class Respect…for yourself, classmates, & teacher Contact me…I’m available! See the Syllabus.

EXAMPLE Oral Log Entry Monday ; 6:00-6:15 pm (date & time) Partner: John Topic: Music styles I said that I preferred Classical music because it is soothing. (summary) John thought it was too soothing, putting him to sleep, so he prefers Classic Rock. (summary) Assesment: I noticed that I am having trouble pronouncing the ‘Th’ sound, but I’ve also improved how fast I can speak a sentence, so I know I am more comfortable with English than I was last month.
