Established by Cyrus the Great Controlled areas from Asia Minor to India – Largest empire in the world (at that time) Tolerance of conquered peoples – Respected the customs of the people they conquered

Persian Empire Darius I- unification of the Persian empire Development of an imperial bureaucracy – Empire was divided into provinces called satrapies headed by officials called satraps – Each satrapy paid taxes based on wealth and resources Construction of road system Economics: use of coins, system of weights and measurements – Switched from a barter economy to money economy
