TWO MINUTE SAUL BASS PRESENTATION STUDENT NUMBER: BY:KASIM

ANSWERING THE QUESTION How are historical ideas of style still relevant today? I will achieve this by analysing his work amongst the contemporary work of todays. Making comparisons and analytical judgments on work from Saul Bass and Shepard Fairey and any other media- orientated art form. I will look at: A range of movie posters and there design aspects. The difference between today’s movie posters vs the movie posters of Saul Bass’ time. Critically evaluating his work amongst todays, and how effective they where at giving a visual representation of film/media. His design decisions and how that effects the audiences perception of that particular work. When analysing research critically I will also take into account; the elements of art: dots, point, line…etc and principles of art: composition, point of interest, balance…etc

HOW WILL THIS BE ACHIEVED? This will be achieved by looking though a comprehensive range of books and internet webpages relating to the subject of Saul Bass and contemporary artists. Saul Bass – The Man with the Golden Arm Saul Bass – Anatomy of a Murder Shepard Fairey - Marvel GTA 3 – Cover Art Shepard Fairey - Obey

ESSAY QUESTIONS Here are some questions I thought of in regards to my designer: How are the historical ideas of Saul Bass still relevant today? How is the style of Saul Bass relevant to the contemporaries of today? What design decisions are prevalent to making a piece of graphic design? How Saul Bass’ design influences remain relevant today? What design influences can be seen juxtaposed to contemporary methods/techniques? How does originality come into fruition when designing a piece of graphic design? In other words my question will answer with criticality, what are the fundamental design aspects that makes a work iconic as well as it’s relation to todays contemporary style.

STRUCTURE OF ESSAY Here is how the essay will be structured and chronologically ordered: Intro – (addressing the question), why I chose Saul Bass, formulating an argument, how I will answer question Building the argument: 1.Designer characteristics – their style, influences design reception, pioneering aspects of design 2.Historical context – the relevancy to today contemporary art 3.Socio-political context – design reception and legacy 4.Conclusion – an informed analytical judgement based on the points and research documented 5.Bibliography – research and reference links
