8 History of Graphic Design Graphic Design was around before the computer… 1893- Coca-Cola becomes a registered trademark Early 1900’s- first “corporate identity” 1922- William Dwiggins is the first to use the term “graphic designer”

9 So… Why study Graphic Design History? ◦ There were major advances & influences in Graphic Design before computer design…which wasn’t until the 1980s

10 Art Movements What do the fine arts have to do with graphic design?? ◦ Graphic arts were influenced by fine arts movements and fine arts were sometimes influenced by graphic arts ◦ Both deal with the use of the Elements and Principles of Design

15 Fine Arts vs. Public Arts AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) article Art vs. Design under “links” Read & Discuss with your Art Movements Group: 1.What is the main theme or main idea of the article? 2.Do you think someone could be considered a “fine artist” if they created entirely digital art pieces? (Or would they only be a fine artist if they used traditional media: paint, pencil, clay, etc.?)
