CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 Lothar Wolf, GEONETCast Implementation Group Table of contents: 1.GEONETCast Overview 2.Status of work 3.GEONETCast coordination 4.Concept of a GEONETCast Alert Channel

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Overview GEONETCast

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Overview EUMETCast Network Centre FENGYUNCast Network Centre GEONETCast Americas Network Centre EUMETCast Users EUMETCast Data Providers FENGYUNCast Users FENGYUNCast Data Providers GEONETCast Americas Data Providers GEONETCast Americas Users Data exchange

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Overview GEONETCast is a good way to access earth observation data… –Operational or project data dissemination –High data volumes are involved –Data timeliness and availability are important (  relevant for alerts) –A number of users could benefit from the same data (  relevant for alerts) –Regular data extraction is required (hourly, daily, weekly) –Data is needed in “low infrastructure” areas or areas of no or limited network (e.g. Internet) availabilities (  relevant for alerts)

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Overview GEONETCast reception stations are –Self contained –Stand-alone –Include data discovery via offline version of the “Product Navigator” (  link to training material!) –Of the shelf very low cost systems GEONETCast is linked to the EO-portal –Online data discovery and indication of data availability via “near-real-time dissemination” on GEONETCast

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 Status of Work Initial Operational Capability –Is in place and being exploited; –Implementation follows the Global Design Concept and Implementation Plan; –Effort now focussed on capacity building and user engagement; –GEONETCast Network Centre Service & Functional Specification being prepared.

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 Status of Work

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 Status of Work (cont) User & Data Provider Engagement –Each region working directly with its users and data providers; –Coordinating with IGDDS and WIS; –Working with providers such as SERVIR, USEPA, RANET, JCOMM/GOOS, ECMWF, INPE, AMESD, CBERS; –A number of EU Environment and ICT projects include use of GEONETCast – DevCoCast, AIDA, AEGOS, MIA-VITA.

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Coordination Coordination with ADC activities –Registered as GEOSS Component –Registered as Data Access GEOSS Service –GEONETCast catalogue is available in central and distributed forms GEONETCast Product Navigator navigator.eumetsat.int Or on your GEONETCast station

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Alert Channel Proof of concept Planned prototype implementation using EUMETCast EUMETCast is EUMETSATs component of GEONETCast EUMETSAT will use CAP for some of its own products. The MSG Volcanic Ash product will be a CAP data example (see presentation by Simon Elliott)

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Alert Channel Channel based dissemination on GEONETCast –Each product/product category is assigned to a dedicated multicast channel on GEONETCast such as RA-VI BMD, Training Channel, Info Channel, Data Channel 1-4 etc. … and “Alert Channel” –Each channel uses either a dedicated or shared bandwidth for dissemination –Priorities are assigned depending on delivery needs –User groups can be assigned to each channel (access control supported)

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Alert Channel –Dedicated bandwidth –Channel is kept free of any other data then alerts –Channel is setup for high priority and immediate dissemination –Data exchange to the partner GNCs –NRT availability of CAP alerts simultaneously on the entire footprint

CAP Workshop, WMO, Geneva 9 – 10 December 2008 GEONETCast Alert Channel GEONETCast Network Centre Partner Network Centre GEONETCast Users Reception Station ALERT Provider e.g. GISC, DCPC, NC, Others Data exchange CAP Alerts Internet Users Normal data High priority NRT- Dissemination of CAP Alert Messages Portal (Product Navigator) Multicast NRT Dissemination -Recognises incoming CAP alert file -Raises alert -CAP Alert stored in WEB portal for Internet retrievals - can discover and subscribe to CAP alerts -High priority processing and NRT dissemination on dedicated channel -On reception of a CAP alert the GNC decodes the alert to distinguish if the alert is for global exchange or regional GNC Reference Reception Station - feedback of CAP alert reception for SLA monitoring - regular transmission of empty alerts in order to check the status of the channel
