Integumentary System Skin, Nails, Hair, Glands

What organs make up the integumentary system? -skin, and accessories (nails, hair, glands) -integument means “covering” -Skin is the largest organ -Helps your body maintain healthy internal environment -melanin gives color to skin

What is the function of the integumentary system? 1.Protection 2.Temperature Regulation 3.Excretion of waste (sweat) 4.Production of vitamin D 5.Sensation

Structure of the skin 3 layers -Epidermis -Dermis -Hypodermis

Epidermis (outermost covering) -Outside layer of skin (what we see) -constantly shed and replace epithelial cells -avascular

Dermis (true skin) -layer below epidermis that contains hair follicles, glands, blood vessels and nerves

Hypodermis -Lies under the dermis -made of loose connective tissue -Connects skin to underlying muscles

Hair Millions cover the body Helps with temperature regulation

Nails grow from nail root made of dead cells high in keratin

Glands Oil glands secrete substance called sebum Sebum softens and lubricates skin Sweat glands over 2.5 million per person major function to cool the body- thermoregulation
