2 & 3 JOHN Class Schedule

3 John 1: I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say. 10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and puts them out of the church. 11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we add our testimony, and you know that our testimony is true. 13 I had many things to write to you, but I am not willing to write them to you with pen and ink; 14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we will speak face to face. 15 Peace be to you.The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name

9 I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say. verses 9 and 10 address the Diotrephes issues I wrote something to the church Diotrephes = the one loving to be first – the idea is the desire to be preeminent “the one who is fond of being the preeminent” (Wuest) does not accept (or receive) what we say --- lit: us accept - to receive to oneself, to receive, admit

10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and puts them out of the church. For this reason = Therefore if I come --- or when I come I will call attention to his deeds which he does call attention - remind, bring to remembrance see 2 Peter 1:12

10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and puts them out of the church. How many deeds did Diotrephes do ? unjustly accusing us with wicked words he himself does not receive the brethren he forbids those who desire to do so (receive the brethren) puts them out of the church

11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God. Beloved – Who is being spoken of here ? do not imitate what is evil imitate - to mimic, but in a good sense, to imitate, follow as an example but (imitate) what is good see 2 Thess 3:7-9, Heb 13:7

11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God. The one who does good is of God – present tense Who is “the one” ? the one who does evil has not seen God – perfect tense Who is “the one” is this case ?

See the Scripture index of Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics for additional insights into tense, voice, mood, case & number in other contexts, verse by verse.
