Welcome to the: FOUNDATION DEGREE IN CHILDHOOD The University of Winchester Programme Introduction

Why are we here? “I want a degree because ……” Finish the sentence. Discuss your answer in a small group with those closest to you. Share your reasons. Join 2 other groups, share, then select 3 most important reasons.

A Principal Belief  Video  What does it show us? “A principal belief is that working with children throughout the Foundation Stage and Primary phase concerns values, aims, attitudes and consequences as well as skills, knowledge and competence. Therefore the programme aims to develop practitioners who are competent, reflective and professional in all areas of their work concerning children.”

A Principal Belief “ The programme is grounded in a particular form of professionalism, that of evidence and research based practice and in a belief that the education of young children is a profoundly people-centred profession. This means that the most important factor determining success in providing effective childhood learning environments is the quality of those charged with facilitating learning. Providing conditions in which young children can learn effectively is a highly skilled process involving sophisticated judgements about appropriate actions taken in response to the unique needs of learners.”

Programme Handbook A copy is provided for your employer/ mentor Please keep for reference throughout your studies Your copy of the common academic regulations is also essential reading Any changes or updates to the programme will be given electronically on the Learning Network
