Lesson Aim: To gain the skills required to select and analyse different extracts from the novel. With a focus on theme analysis. What extracts can I use? Where are they in the book? Which are most appropriate? What might your B question ask about?

Ideas to think about when approaching the B extract if you have to talk about the theme: The setting. How is the setting described to reflect your theme? The way characters act. Are there any actions that link to your theme and what verbs/ adverbs are used to reflect your theme. The way characters act towards each other. See above. Do they say anything that links to the theme? How do they say it? Steinbeck’s general use of technique. For example, in the fight scene we see a lot of violent language.

A question extract- Curley’s wife is talking in the barn to Lennie. 1b) In this extract, you see Curley’s wife discuss her loneliness. Explore one other part of the novel where loneliness is presented to you. You MUST use examples of the language the author uses to describe his ideas.

Think, Pair, Share What extracts could you use? On your own, write down extracts you could use. Include page numbers. Now, share. Did you have the same ideas?
