Free Form Sculptures A look at positive and negative space.

What is positive space? Positive space is the area of an artwork that IS the primary subject or object. It occupies the space.

What is negative space? Negative space in sculpture and art is the space around, above and in-between the object.

What do you see?

Our project is based on positive and negative space in a sculpture. We will build a sculpture and form it into an abstract form. This project has everything to do with working with your hands and shaping wire. Once we have put together our sculptures, they will look something like this…

Example one.

Example Two.

Example Three.

Example Four.

Example Five.

Example Six.

Example Seven.

What does Abstract mean?

Abstract Art which includes painting, sculpture, and graphic art, that does not represent recognizable objects. You have to use your imagination to figure it out. A piece of abstract art can bring out different responses from viewers. YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR IMAGINATION.

How do you plan for an abstract piece of artwork? First you have to think about your materials. In this case, it is Wood, Hangers, Glue, Gesso, and Paint. Next draw some things you might want your piece to represent. I have taught students who have made animals, plants, faces, trees, hands, birds, academy awards, etc….. Your imagination goes wild on this project.

Let’s make our bases and begin… Questions….
