Warm Up Name 1 level on the pyramid of hate Give 1 example for this level

What is Genocide? Genocide as defined by the United Nations in 1948 means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, including: • Killing members of the group • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group • Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Is there just one type of genocide?

Types of genocide Omnicide- simultaneous intentional genocide against numerous races, nations, religions, etc. War crimes against humanity-crimes committed in the course of military actions against military targets, or treatment of prisoners Cultural Genocide- intentional destruction of the culture of another people, not necessarily including the destruction of actual lives Ethnocide- intentional destruction of an ethnic group, including actual lives and disbursement of the people and elimination of culture. Linguicide- forbidding the use of the language of another people

Think about it… Based on the definition of ethnocide, were Native Americans victims of this type of genocide? Write 1 paragraph stating your position and defend. (5 sentences)-10 minutes Discuss (5 minutes)

What about this? Based on the definition of cultural genocide, are Mexicans victims of this type of genocide? Hint: Think about how as Americans some people say “when they (Mexicans) come over here they need to speak English, you’re in America now” 1 more hint: Think about the idea of the United States as a “Melting Pot” versus a “Tossed Salad”. What does this mean to you? Write 1 paragraph stating your position and defend. (5 sentences) -10 minutes Discuss

How about this? Based on the definition of linguicide, were Africans brought over during the middle passage victims of this type of genocide? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CpJpGF8lS8 Write 1 paragraph stating your position and defend. (5 sentences)-10 minutes Discuss
