Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Art, Musical Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Visual/Spatial, Musical Lesson Abstract: Lesson Abstract: Students listen to 3 pieces of instrumental music of different genres or time periods; the idea is to have music that is audibly diverse without lyrics. As students are listening they paint how they feel or their reaction to the music using only line and color. Art Materials: -paper (3 pieces per student) -paint -paint brushes -cups of water for rinsing brushes between color changes -music and a device to play the music with Music Suggestions: Jazz- Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Medeski Martin & Wood Classical- Beethoven, Bach, Mozart Hip Hop- Black Violin, The Beastie Boys “The In Sound From the Way Out”, Matter “Some Beats” *Disclaimer: Be sure to preview music you plan to use in the classroom before exposing students to it. Procedure: -Art supplies are distributed to the students. -Explain the process to the students. Each student will create 3 paintings. Have students label the back of the paper with the genre of music. Lesson adaption ideas: -As students view the paintings created, have them write a poem using descriptive adjectives. -If paint is unavailable, this lesson can be done with another art material such as crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc. -Early childhood students might benefit from using creative movement to dance the lines of the music. Using large paper from butcher paper rolls and paint, students create paintings by dancing on the paper with paint on their feet. -Invite a musician to play live music in your classroom. Area for Teacher Notes: Procedure (continued) -As the music plays students paint using a variety of lines and colors to represent what they hear or feel. Once the music stops students should be given an additional minute without music to finish, if needed. -Students continue the process for a new painting while listening to the other two genres. Assessment: Students critique their artwork and the work of others. One way to do this is to have students place the artworks in three groups, label each group with the name of the genre of music.
