1 Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Art Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Visual-spatial, Logical-mathematical Lesson Abstract: Using a character from a comic strip, students will dilate an image four times by means of a graph. Materials Needed: Comic strip clippings from newspapers, 8 ½ X 11 inch computer paper, rulers, pencils, coloring supplies Procedures 1. Students will find a comic picture that should measure approximately 2⅛ inches by 2 ¾ inches – cannot be any larger. 2. Students are then to draw a grid on their original picture with ¼ inch squares. The grid must be created by the student. 3. Then, students are to draw a grid on a 8 ½ X 11 inch computer paper for the dilated image. Using a ruler, one inch squares should be drawn on this paper. 4. Once the image has been dilated, the image must be colored. 5. When the dilation is finished, students are to turn in both the dilated image and original paper clipped together. Assessment: Students will be graded on quality of the actual dilation, neatness, size of both original and dilated image, and color. See attached rubric for example.
