2. Safety Case : Post Closure Of A Disposal Facility Introduction  The facility is situated in Vaalputs, South Africa.  It is a Near Surface Disposal Facilities (NSDF)  Facility to equip waste of LLW  Total area of 35700 m 2, excluded 200 meter buffer zone  Operational activity of 30 years.

Safety Case : Post Closure Of A Disposal Facility Justification of the safety of the facility:  Built on a ground level  The facility has a suitable foundation below the ground  Its comes in a form of 20 concrete vaults  Concrete wall thickness is approximately 10cm  Drainage system will be maintained underneath the facility, during the operational period  The drainage will be closed at the closure of the site and will be filled with sand.

Safety Case : Post Closure Of A Disposal Facility  Will have engineered barriers which will prevent bath tubing  At the closure of the facility, the walls will be covered with multiple layer cover to form low gradient mound.  The vaults will have waterproof cover on the roof, a layer of compacted clay, soil cover and thick erosion resistant rock / gravel layer.  Being using concrete cubes/boxes and grout, reduce the potential of corrosion from chemical reaction.

Safety Case : Post Closure Of A Disposal Facility Justification for the site :  Vaalputs is situated 90km away from the nearest town thus causing no likely exposure to human habitation.  The site area is situated in a low rain fall areas with an annual rain fall of only 80mm/year. Which reduces the possibility of ground water contamination.  The main occupation in the area being sheep farming, also reduces the potential threat on human life.  The main potential exposures pathway being the drinking borehole water which could cause contamination of animal products. In order to address the same issue, adequate mitigating measures has been taken in the construction.
