3. Specifically… ◦Inferences and conclusions ◦Inference- educated guess using what we know from the text. The author might not say something explicitly but we understand if from context clues. ◦Conclusion- coming to a decision based on things we know from the text as well as background information that we have from our own lives. ◦Context Clues: when we use information FROM THE TEXT (yes, we have to read it)

4. And... ◦Central/Main Idea: The main concept that an author focuses on in a text. What is the text about? ◦Theme: The overall message of the story. What does the text mean, what do we or the characters learn?

5. Characters (you just got these notes) ◦You will need to identify: ◦Protagonist ◦Antagonist ◦Narrator ◦Foil ◦Anti-Hero (if there is one) ◦Round and Flat Characters ◦Static and Dynamic Characters

6. Vocabulary ◦You will need to use context clues to identify the meaning of an unknown word. ◦How do you do this? ◦Read the sentence and the sentences around the unknown words ◦Think about words that you could replace the unknown word with and still have the sentence make sense.

7. Evidence ◦You will be asked to choose the best evidence to support some of your answers. ◦Think about what elements of the text BEST ANSWER THE QUESTION.

8. Grammar 1 ◦Comma Usage ◦You just got some notes on this! ◦Separating 2 compound sentences ◦List of three or more ◦Two or more equal adjectives ◦Introductory Phrase ◦Noun of direct address ◦Sentence interrupter ◦Non-essential appositive phrase

9. Grammar 2 ◦Subject-Verb Agreement (you have notes on this from the past) ◦If your subject is singular, then your verb must be singular. ◦If your subject is plural, then your verb must be plural. ◦Example: I goes to the story is NOT CORRECT.

10. Grammar 3 ◦When we are writing with quotations marks, the punctuation comes INSIDE the quotation. ◦Example: He said “I don’t like going to the store.” ◦Example: “I don’t like going to the store,” he said.
