6 Slaves were sold, by auction, to the person that bid the most money for them. It was here that family members would find themselves split up, as a bidder may not want to buy the whole family, only the strongest, healthiest member. Slave Auctions were advertised posters would be displayed around the town When the slave ship docked, the slaves would be taken off the ship and placed in a pen like this one. There they would be washed and their skin covered with grease, or sometimes tar, to make them look more healthy. This was done so that they would fetch as much money as possible. They would also be branded with a hot iron to identify them as slaves.

7 The slaves would be brought from the pen, in turn, to stand on a raised platform so that they could be seen by the buyers. Before the bidding began, anyone who wanted, could come up and inspect the slaves closely. The slaves were poked, prodded and forced to open their mouths for the buyers. The auctioneer would decide a price to start the bidding. This would be higher for fit, young slaves and lower for older, very young or sickly slaves. Buyers would then bid against each other. The person who bid the most would then own that slave.

16 You are wanting a Serving Maid, preferably a young girl or a well behaved woman who can work around you and your family, keep secrets and be polite to guests. She must also appear smart. Health is important, you want your serving maid to be clean and not give illness to the family. You are wanting a farm labourer, they must be able to work long hours in the open fields in all weathers and be disciplined. Strength and health are important for this kind of work. You are wanting a driver, this person must be disciplined as you will have to trust them away from the safety of the plantation. The driver must also be healthy as they will have long journeys. Good communication skills will also be important for this kind of work. You are looking for a planter, this kind of slave doesn’t always need to be very strong but they must be healthy and able to work outdoors for long hours. Women can perform this kind of work. You are looking for a cook, this is typically a role performed by women, they will need to be clean, healthy and have good communication skills. The cook will be in charge of the domestic servants so it must be someone you can trust and rely on. You are a new plantation owner so are possibly willing to take on a slave with a family. You need a slave who will serve you well in many areas such as planting and domestic work and perhaps driving on occasion, therefore someone you can trust and with good communication skills is vital.
