4 What is it??? Bloom’s Taxonomy is a chart of ideas Named after the creator, Benjamin Bloom A Taxonomy is an arrangement of ideas or a way to group things together

6 Who is Dr. Benjamin Bloom?? He was a teacher, thinker, & inventor His dream was to create a way to organize how we think about thinking 1913-1999

7 The levels of thinking There are six levels of learning according to Dr. Bloom The six levels all have to do with thinking. Each level builds on the next. Level one is the lowest level of thinking of thinking Level six is the highest level of thinking of thinking Evaluation / Judging Synthesis/Creation Analysis /Interpreting Application / Using it Comprehension / Understanding Knowledge / Recall

8 Knowledge or Remembering observation and recall of information knowledge of dates, events, places knowledge of major ideas mastery of subject matter Key words: list, define, recall, memorize, underline, label, quote, name, who, when, where, etc.

11 Comprehension/ Understanding- Do it… By reading this 1 st Body Paragraph – Identify the Concrete Detail (CD): The first benefit of regular exercise is that the release of tension in the body is immediate. For example, according to Dr. Jensen of the Mayo Clinic in Boston, “Tension builds in the body because of an over accumulation of adrenaline produced by stress, anxiety, or fear.” Therefore, doctors agree that performing aerobics or participating in an active sport such as tennis or volleyball for thirty minutes releases tension. Taking about thirty minutes to release frustrations through physical exercise could help him or her to avoid this behavior. Planned physical exercise, therefore, can eliminate, or at least control, tension.

13 Application/Applying- Do it… Demonstrate your ability to create your own body paragraph using the previous topic of how daily exercise is important.

15 Analysis/ Analyzing- Do it… Look at your shoulder partner’s body paragraph on the importance of exercise. Examine their topic sentence, concrete detail and 1 st line of commentary. Did they follow the format? Did the sentences make sense all together?

16 Synthesis or Creating use old ideas to create new ones generalize from given facts relate knowledge from several areas draw conclusions Key words: compose, rewrite, combine, integrate, put it all together, modify, rearrange, substitute, plan, create, design, invent, what if?,

17 Synthesis/Creating- Do it… Improve upon and then combine the best components of yours and your shoulder partner’s body paragraphs to make a super great Thesis Statement that can be used in your introductory paragraph.

18 Evaluation or Evaluating make choices based on reasoned argument compare and discriminate between ideas assess value of theories, presentations verify value of evidence Key words assess, decide, rank, measure, recommend, convince, judge, conclude, compare

19 Evaluation/Evaluating- Do it… Swap your new and improve super Thesis Statements with your face partner. Now, appraise it and recommend any improvement for clarity or flow that you see.

20 Bloom’s Taxonomy and Research When doing research you should always start with the lower levels of thinking –You must have basic knowledge before you can advance to deeper ideas –One great way to improve your knowledge is to READ, READ, READ about your research topic When doing research, always be sure to stretch your thinking to the higher levels of thinking –After you’ve explored your basic knowledge base, challenge your self to new ideas –Always keep a Bloom’s Taxonomy “cheat” sheet with you to help you hit the higher levels of thinking
