4 Available Resources: International Infrasound Consortium (IIC) Appendix A of Summary of Group Discussions during NSF Infrasound Workshop, June 24-25, 2003 The Infrasound Workgroup noted that sufficient resources were available to consolidate as an informal consortium, independent of any funding agencies. We proposed a Memorandum of Understanding for core institutions. MOU presently under review IMS infrasound network data Portable systems: 294 data channels, 93 pressure sensors NOT standardized Sensor development programs, standard data formats (CSS), available software, and supercomputing resources

5 Selected Projects Projects proposed during Group Discussions, NSF Infrasound Workshop, June 24-25, 2003 Teams formed and white papers submitted for internal review Of 8 papers submitted on infrasound, 5 are considered sufficiently mature to be presented to NSF for guidance Studies of eruption processes Modeling of microbaroms Infrasonic remote sensing of the atmosphere Source studies of littoral processes Studies of long-period acoustic waves in the atmosphere

7 Modeling of microbaroms Microbaroms believed to be generated by the nonlinear interaction of ocean surface waves Signals can be used as sources for passive acoustic tomography

8 Remote sensing of the atmosphere Microbaroms, Bhattacharyya et al., 2003 Columbia reentry, 2/1/03

9 Source studies of littoral processes

10 Long-period acoustic waves in the atmosphere Image and characterize the acoustic/gravity wavefield in the upper atmosphere

11 Other projects: Bolides, Solitary Waves, Bioacoustics, Weather-Related Infrasound Projects are interesting and important, but are presently missing key components For some of the projects, we have not identified experts in US academia Suggestion for collaborators or other projects are welcome

12 NSF Guidance Positive feedback, encouraged to submit proposals Requests for new projects EAR proposals due on Dec 1, OCE on Feb 14, ATM is open Fall 2003 AGU Union Session, Recent Infrasound Studies, Phenomena and Development: great opportunity to interact with geosciences community and NSF program managers.

13 Recommended approach Identify funding agencies for basic science in your country, nurture a relationship with them, and establish collaborations In US, identify project of interest to NSF: basic research, not monitoring! NSF has small budget, $100k/year, 3 years Identify experts in US academia that have interest in project Communicate with US Infrasound Steering Committee for NSF effort: quality control, networking, resource sharing Build representation within NSF review committees
